Goal setting is an important step on the road to achievement, whether it be personal or for in the workplace… having goals to work towards will help to motivate you and increase your efforts.
Having strong goals will improve your focus and help you prioritise your work, meaning you will get more done.
Something I find useful is following the SMART targets approach:
Set SPECIFIC goals:
Your goal should be clear and specific to your business or industry. Its easy for targets to become confusing and blurred, making them less trackable in the future. Making your target specific to you and what you want will help you stay on track.
Goals are MEASURABLE and ACHIEVABLE:
As long as they are reasonable then all goals are measurable, but remember you’ve got to show progress and have achievable goals as this will help to make you want to work harder.
Set REALISTIC goals:
When you are creating goals within the work place it is important to make sure you are likely to reach them, as otherwise they will not be effective and are more likely to demotivate you.
TIME-BOUND:
Every goal needs a target date, so that you have a deadline to focus on and something to work towards. Doing this will ensure that tasks and project are completed in a timely manner and you’ll start to see progress in no time! It’s important to make sure you set both short term and long-term goals that will help you to succeed. A short-term goal is something that you want to achieve soon, for example in the near future whereas a long-term goal requires more time and planning. Remember you won’t achieve these straight away… it’s a goal you plan to achieve in a few years’ time.
Finally, remember that goals help you stand out:
You may not realise it but many successful people set goals because they know that this plays a big role in helping them achieve their dreams… so why don’t you do this too? By setting professional goals you’ll have more of an opportunity to stand out from other co workers and it will help improve your overall work experience which will help open up many opportunities throughout your career.
From this it is clear that setting goals is beneficial in many ways, both for individuals and companies. Having a clear focus and positive mindset will help you to keep on track allowing you and your business to grow and succeed.
