Have you ever done the same thing over and over and over, expecting a different result? I have. This year is my third attempt at keeping a successful gym membership and I haven’t given up.
My first gym experience was not a good one. Apart form the die-hard fitness fanatic, you know that a gym is the place you commit to go for one year, pay your subscription and never attend after three months. I lasted three and a half months. My second attempt was no better. I quite the second month. I am at my third attempt because success demands persistence.
“Most people give up just when they are about to achieve success. They quite on the one yard line. They give up at the last minute of the game one foot from winning touchdown.” – H Ross Perot
Never Give Up
Like my commitment to staying fit, regular writing is one thing I have no intention of giving up. You may have committed yourself to a particular project or business or course of action, you hit the very first roadblock and are thinking of giving up. Persist. Perhaps you have already stopped and are not constraining yourself to a disciplined approach. The good news is that you are not the only one. You can make a success out of it by being persistent. Here are a few things to help you get back on track.
- It’s not about you. This may sound cliche but it is truly not about you. Its think about the hundreds of thousands to be impacted by your life and message. If you stop now, then that one person who needs to read your book or be inspired by your songs gets to miss out on your contribution.
- Just do the work. Yes get on with it. Don’t think about it, just do it. In his excellent book, ‘Do the Work’ Steven Pressfield talks about Resistance which cannot be seen, heard, touched, or felt, but is real. The only way to make the progress required to complete your endeavor is to do the work.
- Enrol an accountability buddy. Find someone in your world whom you can trust to hold you responsible for keeping the commitment you have made to yourself. Your chances of success doubles when you have someone walk along side and looks out for you.
- Have a plan and then work our plan. Set some SMART goals and then implement those SMART goals.
Your decision to continue living and not give up on your dreams in life will go a long way in getting you closer to success. It doesn’t matter how many times you fail, what is important for your success is that you get back on your feet and never give up until you arrive at your destination.
