Leadership demands energy, clarity, and presence.
But too often, we give those things away freely—without making time to refuel.
I’ve been there: leading teams, running a business, holding it all together—while quietly running on empty.
The truth? You can’t lead well if you’re not living well.
So here are five thoughts to get you started on the road to leading well.
1. Burnout Isn’t a Badge of Honour
Somewhere along the line, we started glorifying exhaustion—long hours, skipped meals, constant hustle.
But real leadership isn’t about how much you can carry—it’s about how wisely you carry it.
Your team doesn’t just need your work; they need your wisdom, your focus, your calm. And that only comes when you’re rested and rooted.
2. Rest Is a Rhythm, Not a Reward
I used to treat rest like a bonus—something I could earn after I’d crossed the last thing off the list.
But life doesn’t work that way. There’s always more to do. Rest has to be built in—not tacked on.
Scheduling rest is not laziness; it’s leadership. It’s an intentional choice to stay strong for the long haul.
3. Faith and Renewal
As a faith-driven leader, I’ve found that spiritual renewal is just as vital as physical rest.
Morning prayer, stillness, and reflection help me reset—not just my energy, but my perspective.
It’s in these moments that clarity returns, and decisions become clearer.
“In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and trust shall be your strength.”
— Isaiah 30:15
Strength flows from stillness.
4. What Living Well Looks Like
- Taking breaks without guilt
- Saying no to protect your yes
- Spending time with people who fill you up
- Feeding your body, mind, and spirit
- Leading from overflow, not obligation
5. One Small Shift This Week
Pick one thing to restore your rhythm:
- Block 30–60 minutes of unstructured time
- Go for a quiet walk without your phone
- Read, journal, or just sit with your thoughts
- Talk to someone who reminds you of who you are
Start small, but start.
Closing Thought
Living well isn’t selfish—it’s strategic.
It’s how we show up for the people we lead, the work we do, and the purpose we carry.
Don’t wait for burnout to remind you of what matters.
Lead well. Live well. Stay grounded.
