Why Courage Is Not The Absence Of Fear

There are many things that scare me. One of which is heights. So it is unlikely that you will see me get involved in abseiling or bungee jumping. If I have a leaking roof in my house, you are not going to see me get out a ladder and climb on the roof to fix it.

“Bran thought about it. ‘Can a man still be brave if he’s afraid?’ ‘That is the only time a man can be brave,’ his father told him.” ― George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones

Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is being able to act despite being afraid.

When times get tough and intimidating, it’s important to have a leader or for you to be the leader who is ready to charge on.

We sometimes think of a courageous person as someone who is able to stand up to an enemy in the cafe of great danger. However you can show courage in other ways such as:

5 Simple Acts of Courage

#1. Standing up to speak in public

#2. Confronting that difficult staff member

#3. Saying whats on your mind even though you know it is unpopular

#4. Coming up with a motivational speech when every other member of the team is discouraged

#5. Stepping out to start or expand your business in the face of economic uncertainty

As a leader, you will be going to places and doing things you have never done before and it is going to take courage.

What are you afraid of?

We all have things we are afraid of. Many people are afraid of public speaking and as such they never get up to speak despite the message they believe they are carrying in their heart.

But you have summed up the courage to stand up and be a difference maker.

Having courage is not a skill you are born with. You can develop courage by taking little steps in the direction of your fear. You also want to steer clear of negative thoughts as this can amplify the situation in your mind. Remember that no matter how difficult the situation is, there is always a new path that can be taken in the right direction. Don’t let your spirits get low, and always remember to motivate those around you.

We look around in history and we find many records of acts of courage performed by ordinary people like you and I.

So what are you afraid of. Whats holding you back.

Don’t let fear draw the line that acts as a boundary of self limitation to what you can or cannot achieve.

Be scared and move forward.

Be courageous.
